Data and verification
Clear sources are as important as clear directions
RestAreasNearMe.org combines rest-area information from multiple sources into a consistent, searchable directory. Because roadside conditions can change without notice, we show where information came from, when it was checked, and when a detail still needs confirmation.
Our source priority
We generally use sources in this order:
- Official transportation sources — state departments of transportation, turnpike authorities, transportation agencies, and official facility pages.
- Current official notices — closure alerts, construction notices, travel advisories, and emergency updates.
- Facility operators — when a facility is managed by an identifiable operator with current public information.
- Reliable public datasets — structured government or transportation datasets with identifiable publication dates.
- Traveler reports and credible secondary sources — used as leads for review, not automatically treated as confirmed facts.
When reliable sources conflict, we do not simply choose the most convenient answer. We compare dates, prefer the source closest to the facility’s operation, and flag the record for review when uncertainty remains.
What our labels mean
Officially sourced
The displayed field is supported by an identifiable government, transportation-authority, or facility-operator source. The source may still change after our last check.
Verified
The specified information was compared with the cited source on the displayed verification date. “Verified” does not mean that RestAreasNearMe.org physically inspected the location, guarantees that every amenity is working, or monitors the facility continuously.
Community report
A traveler has submitted an update that may be useful but has not yet been fully confirmed. Community reports should be presented separately from verified facts until reviewed.
Needs review
The information may be incomplete, old, or inconsistent across sources. Treat it as a planning lead and confirm important details with the relevant official agency.
Reported closed, seasonal, or restricted
The listing has a status supported by the source and date shown. Temporary conditions can change quickly, so visitors should check the linked official notice when timing is important.
What “last verified” means
The Last verified date shows when we last checked the displayed information against the cited source. It is not a promise that the facility was open or unchanged at the moment you viewed the page.
Different details can have different source dates. For example, a facility’s coordinates may be stable while its restroom status, operating hours, or parking availability changes more frequently.
Information we aim to provide
When available and relevant, a rest-area record may include:
- Facility name and type
- State, highway, direction, and mile marker
- Geographic coordinates and map location
- Reported status and hours
- Restrooms and drinking water
- Accessible facilities and parking
- Car, truck, trailer, and RV parking information
- Pet areas, picnic areas, playgrounds, and vending
- Dump stations, charging, Wi-Fi, and other services
- Previous and next stops in the same driving direction
- Official source link, source date, and last verification date
Not every official source publishes every field. An omitted amenity means “not confirmed” unless the listing explicitly says it is unavailable.
Update and correction process
We use a combination of scheduled source reviews, automated change detection where suitable, and manual checks. Automated signals can identify possible changes, but safety-relevant edits should not be published as verified without an appropriate source or human review.
Traveler reports enter a review queue. We may compare the report with official notices, contact an agency or operator, examine supporting evidence, and update the record with a new source and verification entry.
We may preserve a non-personal history of material status changes to make the record easier to audit. Reporter contact information is not displayed publicly.
Known limits
- Coverage and detail vary between states and facilities.
- Some agencies update their public records more frequently than others.
- Temporary closures, outages, construction, weather, and parking availability may change after a source was checked.
- Map coordinates and mile markers can be approximate.
- A listed amenity may be unavailable, full, inaccessible, seasonal, damaged, or restricted when you arrive.
- RestAreasNearMe.org is not a substitute for official travel alerts, road signs, emergency services, or safe driving judgment.
